As someone a self taught, I spent many many hours reading
and studying everything I could find about instrument
making and did not fail even on the first instrument (a
spruce/wenge, Bouchet copy).
I’m an amateur classical guitarist and this enables
me to competently evaluate the guitar from a players
perspective, which is a rare skill among luthiers.
Guitar making is not just to stick the wood pieces together,
there are a lot of factors, sometime paradoxal, to be
considered. You must find a good
balance between the volume, clarity, bass-treble balance
and tone
seperation etc.
altough a guitar sounds the same tone, there would be
different comments from each individual listener or
players. So one luthier’s mission must be finding an
optimum and acceptable blend of all these factors.
